CEO Panel: Leadership Insights: Building a Resilient Workforce 

Leaders of four major health systems discussed current innovations and future trends to improve the resilience of their workforce. The panel focused on challenges faced, recent activities, and the future state of the hospital workforce.

Jacob Cintron is president and CEO of the El Paso County Hospital District (EPCHD), which includes University Medical Center of El Paso, El Paso Health, El Paso Children’s Hospital, and University Medical Center Foundation of El Paso. Cintron holds a bachelor of science in industrial engineering, a master of business administration, and a master of accountancy, all from the University of Texas at El Paso. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, board member of the Texas Hospital Association, past board chair of Teaching Hospitals of Texas, board member of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce and United Way of El Paso, and serves on various other El Paso committees and boards.

Wendy Horton is CEO of UVA Health Medical Center, where she collaborates with leaders, physicians, faculty, and team members to deliver high-quality care and achieve the best possible outcomes for all patients. Horton holds a bachelor of science in pharmacy degree from Oregon State University, a master of business administration in marketing and finance from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and a doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Utah. She is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Horton holds several volunteer leadership positions in central Virginia, including serving on the board of directors for the Charlottesville Chamber of Commerce.

Darrell Terry is president and CEO of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. A 25-year employee of RWJBarnabas Health, he is Board Certified in Healthcare Administration and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Terry received a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Seton Hall University and a master’s degree in public health from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. Mr. Terry is a distinguished Paul Harris Fellow and a fellow of the New Jersey Healthcare Executive Leadership Academy.

Kate Walsh is president and CEO of the Boston Medical Center health system, a private, not-for-profit academic medical center dedicated to meeting all the needs of its patients, needs that often transcend the scope of traditional medicine like food and housing insecurity, and advancing health equity within the communities it serves. Walsh received her bachelor of arts degree and a master’s degree in public health from Yale University. She has served as a member of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and currently serves on the Boston Public Health Commission, the Massachusetts Hospital Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges, Pine Street Inn, and Yale University.
